The pricing model is hard to swallow for those of us who have enjoyed such function for free in the past, but here is how it works: Users can sync up to 3 profiles and 100 files for free. Through its GoodSync Connect service, users can synchronize any folder or files without size limits to any other computer with GoodSync installed (whether that other computer is on the same GoodSync Connect account or on a different GoodSync Connect account). So, I turned to Siber Systems’ GoodSync, an application that provides the same function as Windows Live Mesh, albeit for a cost. All of this is to say I have been unable to find a free utility that matched Windows Live Mesh’s features and functions. Whereas services like Dropbox and SkyDrive can make money by offering subscription fees and additional fees for incremental storage space increases in the cloud, products that allow for direct, peer-to-peer synchronization have no way to make incremental profit based on usage. Products like Live Mesh allowed users to completely bypass any sort of storage limits because files and folders could be directly synchronized between multiple computers. After all, there is a lot of money to be made in online subscription storage plans. The lack of alternatives is hardly surprising. While SkyDrive may fill the needs of some, one of the major problems will be data caps and the inability to directly synchronize files between computers, completely skipping the cloud. Sadly, Microsoft has decided to kill the project in favor of its SkyDrive service.
